Shelter in Orange TX

After Katrina and Laura we expected that we might see a large influx of folks from Louisiana that needed sheltering.Last year that was in the thousands.*That did not occur.*
Last night our shelter residents in Houston and the Texas North coast fell beneath 100.In consultation with government in both Texas and Louisiana we have developed a strategy of getting residents to shelter closer to home and to concentrate our Red Cross resources in Louisiana and the other states that suffered damage directly.
Power Status
In Louisiana we now have 700 trained Red Cross disaster workers on the ground, and we are sheltering in the thousands.We also have formal Disaster Relief operations in progress in 6 states that took damage.
In Texas we will provide recovery resources to shelter residents to return home where possible, or to relocate to open shelter closer to home in Louisiana.For evacuees in Hotels and Homes we are still offering services including where needed:
Comfort Kits; Gas Cards; Disaster Health Services; Disaster Mental Health; Disaster Spiritual Care; and Resource Referrals / Case management.
These services will continue to be available through Texas Red Cross until *9/12.***
We have transferred many of our on the job resources to Louisiana where they are badly needed. We will fall back on the Red Cross workforce who remain in Texas – normal chapter and region operations.That transition will probably complete by Tuesday 9/7.
