[STXARES] Yaho groups going away

I can’t any anything as to where the URL is from or where the Groups.io has there servers… I can say that in recent days some of the Yahoogroups that I’m a member of have had emails delivered 24 hours after they were sent…

If you go to Groups.io’s about page it lists Mark Fletcher as the developer… Mark was the guy that created eGroups which was bought out by Yahoo 20 years ago… So this is not his first rodeo…
https://groups.io/static/features

For now, this group is only using the FREE service… Any plans to add features that cost will be done by the leadership… Speaking of which I’ve upgraded Jeffery as the SEC and Paul as the SM to owners so if I get ran over by a reindeer the group can continue on… I’m not an owner or moderator of the STXARES Yahoogroups so it’s out of my hands as what happens to that group… So I leave that in the hands of the leadership and the volunteers that run that group…

You don’t have to visit the Groups.io site to join the email group… Only if you want to look at files and folders, create databases, use the wiki or use other features other than the email reflector…

To simply join the email reflector all you have to do is send an email to stxares+subscribe@groups.io
Then check your inbox and spam box for an email and reply to it… It’s that simple/complex…

To post emails to the group you simply send them to stxares@groups.io

Somewhere in your STXARES profile, you get to select if you get copies of the email you sent to the group… To me, that should default as on so you get confirmation that your email was sent and reflected by the group…

More to be sent later as it’s dinner time…

Additional to what Dallas remarked.

49 members in .io as of this writing.
Some use their whole name, some use their first name, some use their email address, some use their call sign.
Some use a combination of any of the above.

We need to have some uniformity. We need to keep it professional.
Whatever we decide, some individual .io information may need to be edited including my own.

To be continued.

I agree… We need to nail this down before it gets worse…

At a minimum, I’d like to see Firstname Callsign… Capitalize the first letter of your name and use all caps for your call…

For those that have really common names like; Jeff, Jim, Joe, Jon, John, etc feel free to use First and Last name… But with a call sign that may not be necessary…

Most that joined simply replied to the mass invite I sent out and your account profile used what was on file from any previous groups.io account(s) you had or what was used in the email you replied with…

A second way to join is to send an email to stxares+subscribe@groups.io and then check your inbox/spam folder to confirm you really wanted to join… This also sets your account profile by what was already on file or from the email you used to create your account…

The good news is, either way, you are on the email reflector… Any firewall settings should be avoided as you never go to groups.io with your browser…

The bad news is you have not created a login to control how you are identified to the group and you don’t have access to the files, folders, and features of the group… You can only get and send emails…

For many that may be all you want… If you sign your emails with your name/call the owners/moderators can edit your profile and fix it so your First name and Call are used…

To create a .io login follow this link and put in your email address and select Forgot or your password or don’t have one yet?
https://groups.io/login

To edit your Identity you have to select Identity on the left menu and edit your Group Profile…

If you want to use the same profile for all groups you can make your Account and Group profile match… That way if you join any other groups you will use the same Name Call for all emails posted…

So to join simply send an email to stxares+subscribe@groups.io and if you put your name and call in the email I’ll edit your Group listing but without a login you are missing out on all the features of the group…

I know I’m late to this discussion but if the member list is sortable, we might want to do LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME, CALL.

I don’t see either sort or search capability which kinda sucks.

IMHO the official membership roster is in the ARES vault/database… You should be able to download it and import the xml file into Excel… But it has first nicknames and last in the name field…

I did not realize this was a chat room. I was under the impression that it was for ARES related messages only. But, here I am “chatting”. I will be unsubscribing at end of day.

I agree with this point.

That was a ‘chat’ response, John, which was on point. I disagree. If Michael does not

wish to be informed (an active ARES member), that’s up to him. Maybe we could impose

‘official only’ on the main site and allow more free-flow (but ARES related) conversation

on sub-boards which, I would think, would be controlled by DECs or their assigns? That

said, there has to be some way to get feedback, corrections, suggestions, etc. for official

posts on the main board so a conversation needs to be had somehow.

Michael,

It’s exactly the same as Yahoo Groups…so I am assuming it’s only a ‘chat room’ because you’ve not chosen to change your preferences to, for example, Digest Mode, where you’d only get one email per a specified timeframe, such as one per day, etc.

I hope that helps.

Greetings….

Wading into the thread about the new STXARES group and its purpose.

The prime purpose is to disseminate STX Section relates ARES information when and as needed just as the Yahoo group has sone for years.

It is also for developing relationship across the section for those in ARES, like the Yahoo group did.

There are no changes in the manner of use of this group vs the yahoo group.

It does have the added feature that is a DEC want to communicates only with his district and not take up bandwidth from the main list, we have that hearture.

We are going to give that a try, but if it is not used much, we ,ay merge the DEC groups back into the main group.

For the time being, I ask everyone be patient as members come on board, get their accounts set up and tested.

The Yahoo group was a great asset but it is changing. Groups.IO will be a great asset also once all are on board and moving forward.

Any questions, please contact direct or call 512-940-0441.

Thank you..
