Does anyone know of local 'Ham Crams" or “Tech-in-a-day” classes in the greater Houston area coming up soon?

I do not - I am in the greater San Antonio area.

FYI - the Atascosa County Amateur Radio Club is holding a Tech license class on April 3,4,5 of this year. 3rd and 4th will be from 6 pm to 9 pm, and the Saturday 5th class begins at 8 am and goes until around noon or 1 pm to be followed immediately with the Tech exam. Please pass along to anyone knowing anyone interested in this class and test. I’ll give further details to those people interested.

You might ask BVARC if they will have any such classes at their HAM fest.

I just put that suggestion on the BVARC mail list…I’ve missed the planning committee meetings due to other commitments but I think this would be a great thing , a general BS forum to discuss operation, rules and regulations, etc

It may or may not happen…so close to the hamfest..all it needs is a room to hold it in. I’ll see what can be done…Mike N5VCX would probably be in favor of it, knowing him..we known each other for years..he helped me in getting my IOD spot at TX DPS. :grin:

Don’t feel bad. I’ve had my general for about 2 years and due to my family situation haven’t been in a position to purchase an HF radio or go on air. IFF all goes well, that should change in the next few months.

I am on the same boat. I got my general and when I definitively want to get a HF Radio, something happens that I go back to square one. I would love to take the Extra Exam in the summer.

I always recommend the K4IA books if someone wants the “quick” way to get a ticket.. They are about 20 bucks on Amazon. He (the author, Craig “Buck” K4IA) sells them for tech, general, and extra. Each is about 150 pages, and reads like an anecdotal fishing story.. They are money-back guaranteed to pass you if you actually read the book. For most people who are not obsessed with comprehensively understanding every single aspect of every possible topic, they are a great way to go.. Get the correct answers stuck in your mind, pass the test, and get the ticket. Learn the rest as you need it, down the road..

If you’d rather spend weeks actually learning the concepts and take the test in a comprehensive manner, I like hamtestonline.com. They have the best course material I have seen. It’s about 30 or 40 dollars a class, and you get access for 3 months, but their material is very well put together, and organized better than most university-caliber online learning platforms.. I used their program back in 2018 and it was worth every penny. Passed all 3 exams the first time, in less than 2 weeks.

I agree 100% with Kenny K5MXJ.
The K4IA books were all I used to pass my General and Extra exams. Focusing on just the right answer was the key.
