Harald your call sign is at the bottom of the first list of digital check ins. You would have to look at David’s original email and not any that have the call sign table in a quote.

Donald if you connect to a Winlink gateway again you might get a kickback email that shows why your message didn’t get delivered.

I just connected to Winlink - Telnet and got the following message.

I put TXARES-HF in the to box and when it is sent its converted to stx-ares@arrl.org and then refuses the message.

Please explain what the address needs to be so that I dont make the same mistake next Monday.

KJ5DJM (Jim von Suskil) here - District 14 SW. I checked in and do not see my call sign. There was a problem with reception on your end but another participant confirmed my call sign and name.

I would appreciate any suggestions for improved connectivity.

I have never seen that error before. TXARES-HF is a tactical address.

TexasARES-HF is a “tactical” address. You might try sending your Vara-HF text to “Taxas_ARES_Net_HF” which VARA HF should translate to TexasARES_HF. If you are only using winlink telnet it will not work. You must use winlink with VARA HF.

Just to clear this up –

  1. TXARES-HF is a valid destination address. Regardless of mode, be it Telnet, VARA, PACTOR, Packet, etc..
  2. We get dozens of check-ins each week from all over Texas using that ‘tactical’ callsign.
  3. WL2K (WinLink) does not, under any circumstances, change the TO: line. Who you send it to is who Winlink sends it to.
  4. “Taxas_ARES_Net_HF” is not a valid Winlink address. Chances are it will go nowhere and/or bounce.
  5. Always Cc: your non-winlink email on everything you send. If YOU got it, THEY got it, unless you typed a bad TO: address.
  6. Of course SMTP:stx-ares@arrl.org got kicked back. That email address does not exist. (unless it is a placeholder created by the League to drop either to Stuart Wolfe, or a black hole on the server)

Suggestion: Perhaps it would be beneficial, since we have so many new ARES members on the net, to offer an online WinLink 101 tutorial training. If any of you are interested in such a training, please let me know and I will make it happen. Even a FEW classes to accommodate people with different availability.

We have a platform available to us that can take over your computer screen and walk you through the processes. (Securely)

I am a firm believer that Ham Radio folks acting in an AUXCOMM role will NEED to be familiar with Winlink and all its nuances. That is the system we will use to get messages (by whatever means!) from the outposts back to the served agencies when called upon to do so.

So, lets get this done and end the ambiguity!

OK.

I am pretty new to ham radio, using a handheld Yaesu VX-6R and it seems to be functioning well. Incoming signal is strong and the first transmission of my name and call sign was acknowledged. During the final check, one letter needed clarification and I had trouble making it known. Another operator confirmed my name and call sign.

I’ll check transmit power and signal strength. The comeback from the repeater is strong. More to learn and practice.

Hiya JVS! Let me try to help you out here.

First off, the Yaesu VX-6R is a VHF/UHF handheld. There is no way to access the State ARES HF net with that radio. It is on HF, which requires:

  1. A general class or higher Ham license.
  2. A radio/antenna capable of working 3.873/7.285 MHz, the 2 frequencies we use for the net.

There are no repeaters involved in the Monday Night ARES HF net.
