David and others,

Net Control in his preamble (I assume) is asking for additional information with the Digital Check in items currently listed in the Meeting Emails. How about updating that information to the current info in the net notices.

Can we update the meeting notification to reflect the information requested for Winlink checkins as per this observation?

Also regarding digital check-ins, what are the various options recommended for use when checking in?

I believe they are:

  1. Telnet Winlink
  2. Packet Winlink
  3. Pactor Winlink
  4. Vara HF Winlink
  5. Vara FM Winlink - VHF
  6. Vara FM Winlink - UHF
    I believe the idea is to ensure that equipment for the various options is fully operational and to get practice in using each option. With this approach the maximum digital checkins should be 6. I have heard numbers above 6 and into the teens frequently. I have to think numerous contacts on different RMS repeaters and bands being used, but I do not believe that is intent of the exercise.

When I first got involved with ARES there were several seminars on using VARA. A template for Winlink reports was developed and I have notes on that and have setup templates for my use in weekly reporting.

I believe Telnet is under appreciated in Winlink discussions. If you are in an actual operation and have internet connection (it’s becoming more ubiquitous all the time) use it instead of tying up radio channels for stations that only have access via RF. It’s a lot faster and you may be holding up vital communications from other stations. Just my $0.02 worth.

Agreed. Revised winlink at the ddc during Hurricane Harvey but on telnet because we never lost internet.

We build our EmComm infrastructure from radio up, slowest data rate first. (CW, voice, HF data, VHF data,…). But half the problem is familiarity with the content. (Using templates, making logs, generating maps…). There should be some thought given to how best achieve a balance between testing levels of technology and training operators for mission environments. Just a thought.

Planning for the loss of the internet is essential. Testing and improving that infrastructure is essential, but, NOT using it if you don’t need it would be the thing to do during an emergency to leave as much capacity in place as possible.
