Skywarn classes for the Houston/Galveston office are listed at https://www.weather.gov/hgx/skywarn_schedule. The schedule for 2026 isn’t up yet, but last year they started in March. The office typically offers an online class at least once per season.

There are two courses through MetEd (https://www.meted.ucar.edu/) that you can take that give you the meterological background without the specifics for a local are. The two courses are the “Role of the Skywarn Spotter” and “Skywarn Convective Basics”. They have a ton of other free courses to wet your meteorological whistle.

Another option is Spotter Network (https://www.spotternetwork.org/). They have their own training program which is very good.

These online courses can get you started and are counted by most organizations as “Skywarn Training”. I still recommend picking up the HGX program when they start presenting them this spring as they cover local hazards and contact procedures.

NWS Birmingham has online Skywarn training openings and will have ADVANCED on March 24th.
I attended the basic last night online.
