Several things the article glossed over. There are four large regional radio systems in Texas. By regional, 10,000+ square miles of coverage and are standards compliant P25 systems. They are the Texas Wide Area Radio Network (TxWARN) based out of the Houston metro area, the North Texas Interoperable Radio Network (NTIRN) based out of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, the Lower Colorado River Authority’s system (LCRA) based out of the Austin area, and the Greater Austin/Travis Regional Radio System (GATRRS) also based out of the Austin area. Of those, LCRA’s is the only non-Motorola based system and is based on L3-Harris infrastructure. They all support 700 MHz and 800 MHz. GATRRS also supports VHF. Kerr County’s system is part of GATRRS. There are nearly 50 P25 radio systems in the State of Texas. Not all of them are Motorola or L3-Harris. There is also EF Johnson (a JVCKENWOOD owned company based out of Irving, TX), Tait (a New Zealand based manufacturer who has a North American office in Houston) and RF Technologies systems (Austrailian based with a Houston based office) systems as well. Currently none of those have scaled to the size equivalent to the larger four systems.
