Help programing output PL tone on IC-T90A

I’ve got an older handheld I’ll be using for the marathon next weekend and need some assistance on how to program it to use the 147.00 output PL tone for the race. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello John,

Someone has already posted the manual in the email chains. I have copied the entire group because I believe this procedure to be usable for all transceivers in general (only the manual orientation and page numbers will change) and therefore might be of some use to others. It is strongly recommended you have a complete copy of the manual with you but as an absolute minimum, all the pages referenced below.

The ICOM T-90 is an excellent transceiver. Avoid strain on the antenna connection as it may loosen and damage the internal connection to the antenna connector. SMA connectors in general are not near as forgiving of rough treatment as the BNC connectors or Motorola style threaded posts. They do work well and are reliable with careful handling.

To program repeater frequencies you need three points on information regarding the repeater you are trying to program operation for.

  1. Repeater transmit frequency (147.00 mHz
  2. Repeater offset frequency and direction
  3. PL tones for transmit and optionally for receive.

In general, I use little post it tabs to flag each of these sections in the manual, then program in the order indicated above.

Page 29 demonstrates how to set up repeater operation. Please note that some repeater operating on band edge frequencies (x.000, etc.) may have offset different from default offsets programmed in transceiver (auto repeater function page 33).

Page 70 is the start of the tone setting sequence.

Also reference page 11 Display layout and indicators (this will help in determination that transceiver is set correctly.

For a handheld you will also wish to transmit with highest power: See page 28.

Also set squelch level to minimum needed, see page 22.

Set time out time to 90 seconds, this will keep transceiver hung in transmit from killing the net operations. See page 76.

Then test (don’t kercunk the repeater, ID and request radio check). Depending on time of day, it make take a few trys to have a response. If there is someone that can help, call in advance and set up a testing schedule. Don’t wait till Saturday morning, please!

Last item: Once working, know how to lock the keyboard to prevent unscheduled programming changes. See pages 7-10 for details of keyboard and key functions.

Ouch that’s $49 bucks plus tax and shipping…

I’d start with the manual and if that didn’t work I’d consider the RT System software or getting a radio that is easier to program…
